In this Jane Says guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all of this Jane's Addiction acoustic classic.
The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E. However, many live videos I have seen of Jane's Addiction playing this song, have them tuned down a minor third to make the vocals easier to sing. But we will be covering the album version here, which is in standard tuning.
This song is pretty simple in that there are only a couple of guitar parts to learn. The main riff, which intros the song and acts as the song's verse as well, has a great groove to it. It is based around G major and A major chords with a quick little four note lick at the end. Getting the rhythm accurate is crucial here, so I will talk about that quite a bit in the video lesson.
There are a couple of guitars of the original recording and they are both playing different voicings of the G major chord. I will detail that as well in the lesson.

Jane Says - Janes Addiction - Two Chord Ukulele Song, with Tabs
Today we are going to learn how to play Jane Say's by Jane's addiction. Not sure who Jane was, but she clearly had a pretty big impact on this band! This is just a two chord song at its core but it is a great example of how you can get a lot out of so little. The songs adds pull offs, changes on the offbeat, 16th note strumming, and a bass that pushes the G major to a G major 7, we incorporate the bass to give it that flavor. I love two chord songs, I really do, and this is a great example of a classic one that it is a ton of fun play once you get it down. Groove based music is magical and this is a great example of how powerful strum patterns can be. Looking at old photos of the band I almost forgot that Dave Navarro was in this band, haha. Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ink Master and Sons of Anarchy, the dude is like that free agent baseball player that has played for half of the teams in MLB. His work here with Jane's Addiction in the late 80s and early 90s is my favorite guitar playing of his. I consider him to be the weakest of the 3 guitarist that have played with RHCP in their mega popularity stage, I consider him to be the weakest fit, not the weakest guitar player, just the weakest fit for the band. Hellloooooo!!!! I have missed doing this a lot but whoa baby llllliiiiiiyyyfffeeee. Home on a Friday afternoon that has no idea if it wants to rain or shine and excited to bring a little arrangement to the world that I was playing with this week. And what a week she’s been. Heavy. Another school shooting. A death in our friend community. Sicknesses and diagnoses of people I know, every day stressors, and trying to just live and be and try to see the light and beauty during it all. And that is truly what keeps me going. I think I was put on this earth for a handful of pretty specific reasons and I truly believe one of those is to enjoy, point out and try to create as much beauty and love as I possibly can. They won’t all be masterpieces but as much as we need people to do the type A work and help make the world go round and function, there just as much needs to be those of us that feel in our cells that the world also needs to be appreciated and loved and dripping with as much art as it can hold. So this afternoon, that looks like this piano solo arrangement of a song I have always loved so much - and the profound simplicity of a two-chord, chord progression. Party on, my party people.
