Todays song is Speak Life by Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley. Much like several modern icons, Damian Marley (Damian Robert Nesta Marley) operates as a solo artist and DJ rather than a traditional band. He is the youngest son of the legendary reggae pioneer Bob Marley. Fun fact, when Damian was born, his parents initially spelled his name "Damien." However, near the very end of his life in Germany, Bob Marley watched the classic horror film Damien: Omen II, which focuses on a child who grows up to be the Antichrist. Terrified by the film's dark cinematic context, Bob realized it was completely inappropriate for a Rastafarian child to carry that moniker. One of his final deathbed wishes was a frantic request to have his youngest son's name officially changed to the softer, alternative spelling of "Damian."
"Speak Life" was officially released on July 21, 2017, as a standout track on his critically acclaimed fourth studio album, Stony Hill. The record went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. True to its title, the song serves as a profound conscious roots-reggae guide on how to navigate a dark, turbulent world through positive manifestation. It encourages listeners to consciously speak light, hope, and blessing into existence, even when enduring severe physical or emotional hardships.
