The classic, definitive post-punk line-up features Ian McCulloch (vocals), Will Sergeant (guitar), Les Pattinson (bass), and Pete de Freitas (drums).The group's unusual name was entirely a product of a random list of words created by a local friend. While looking for a name that sounded surreal and didn't fit traditional punk rock tropes, a mate kept throwing out ridiculous suggestions, including The Daz Men, Glycerol and the Fan Extractors, and Mona Lisa and the Grease Guns. Echo & the Bunnymen was buried on that list, and guitarist Will Sergeant admitted he initially thought it was "just as stupid as the rest," but they ran with it for their very first 12-minute gig at Liverpool's legendary Eric's club.

He woke up in a panic with the phrase burned into his mind and spent the next few days building the lyric sheet around it. He frequently describes the track not as a pop song, but as a "psalm" or a hymn that felt like it was already written in the stars.
