Today's song is Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want by The Smiths. The band formed in Manchester, England, in 1982. The legendary, era-defining four-piece featured Morrissey (vocals), Johnny Marr (guitars), Andy Rourke (bass), and Mike Joyce (drums). Together, they became the ultimate architects of 1980s British alternative rock and indie pop. When the band first came together, the UK music landscape was completely dominated by flashy, extravagant, and synthetic New Wave acts carrying pretentious names like Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark or Spandau Ballet. Morrissey and Marr fiercely rejected this plastic grandiosity. They chose "The Smiths" because it was the most common, plain, and ordinary surname in the English language. They wanted their identity to declare that they were regular, working-class people making real, unvarnished guitar music for other ordinary people.

This song was released on August 24, 1984. It first debuted as the B-side to their commercially successful single "William, It Was Really Nothing," before being permanently compiled later that year on their seminal albums Hatful Of Hollow and Louder Than Bombs. Despite beginning its life as an obscure vinyl B-side, the song achieved massive, cross-generational immortality through Hollywood cinema. It famously served as the emotional centerpiece for John Hughes's 1986 teen classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off (featured in a beautiful, slow instrumental cover by The Dream Academy inside an art museum). Decades later, the original track was handpicked to soundtrack the romantic, record-shop bonding sequence in the 2009 film (500) Days of Summer, permanently cementing it as the ultimate anthem for melancholic, unrequited longing.
