Counting Crows - Mr. Jones (ASL?, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

Todays song is Mr. Jones By Counting Crows. The band formed in Berkeley, California in 1991 by singer Adam Duritz and guitarist David Bryson. Counting Crows became icons of the 1990s alternative boom by rejecting grunge's aggressive distortion in favor of emotionally raw, poetic folk-rock storytelling.

This song was released in December 1993 as the lead track from their 7x Platinum debut album, August and Everything After, the song catapulted the band from Bay Area indie obscurity into global alternative rock superstardom.

The song was inspired by a wild night out in San Francisco's Mission District. Duritz and Marty went to a bar called the New Amsterdam after watching Marty's father, a professional flamenco guitar player, perform. While drinking, they spotted Chris Isaak's drummer sitting in the corner surrounded by women. Too shy to approach anyone themselves, they jokingly rationalized that if they were just "big rock stars," talking to women would be effortless and they would never be lonely. Duritz went home that night and wrote the song about chasing those dreams.

So let's learn this one together. I'm shocked that I haven't found an ASL version yet (can you make one?). While we are waiting on that let's learn this one and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano.  Let's get in to it.

Outkast - Hey Ya (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

Todays song is Hey Ya! by Outkast. The legendary Atlanta-based duo is composed of Antwan "Big Boi" Patton and André "André 3000" Benjamin. Emerging in the early 1990s, they single-handedly put Southern hip-hop on the national map with their landmark 1995 source awards declaration that "the South got something to say." Over the course of six studio albums, the duo radically expanded the boundaries of the genre by seamlessly blending rap with funk, psychedelia, jazz, techno, and rock. Their boundary-pushing artistry culminated in their 2003 double album, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, which spawned massive global hits like "Hey Ya!" and "The Way You Move," and made them one of the only hip-hop acts ever to win the prestigious Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

Before settling on Outkast, high school friends André and Big Boi originally called themselves "2 Shades Deep" and later "The Misfits," but they quickly discovered that another group had already trademarked the Misfits name. Determined to find a synonym that captured their feeling of being musical outsiders in a rap scene heavily dominated by New York and Los Angeles, they flipped through a dictionary. They stopped when they hit the definition for an outcast—"a person who is rejected or cast out from home or society"—and decided to claim that outsider status as a badge of honor, adding their own signature twist by changing the "c" to a "k."

This song was released in September 2003 as a dual-lead single alongside Big Boi's "The Way You Move", the song spent nine consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming a defining anthem of 2000s pop culture and winning Best Urban/Alternative Performance at the 2004 Grammy Awards.

While the track sounds like an incredibly upbeat, joyous celebration, its lyrics actually tell a deeply cynical story about the breakdown of a modern relationship. André 3000 sings from the perspective of someone trapped in a failing, stagnant romance who stays purely out of habit and fear of being alone ("If they say forever is hell-bent, then what makes, what makes, what makes love the exception?"). He explicitly calls out the audience's willingness to ignore the emotional weight of the song for the sake of the upbeat melody during the breakdown: "Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance."

So let's learn this one together, the ASL version and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Plus check out the bonus covers. Let's get in to it.
