Todays song is Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana. I love this song and album, In Utero was the first CD I ever bought back in the early 90's. Nirvana was a legendary American grunge and alternative rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Fronted by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain, with Krist Novoselic on bass and Dave Grohl on drums, they became the defining band of the 1990s generation.
Before settling on Nirvana, the band performed under several different names, including Skid Row, Fecal Matter, and Ted Ed Fred. Kurt Cobain eventually chose Nirvana because he wanted a name that sounded beautiful, peaceful, and pleasant rather than a heavy, aggressive, or generic punk rock name. He explained that he was attracted to the Buddhist concept of Nirvana, which represents a state of total freedom from pain, suffering, and the external world.
This song was released as a single on August 30, 1993, serving as the lead track for Nirvana's final studio album, In Utero, and while the audio track itself did not win traditional songwriting awards. It played a key role in the album receiving a 1994 Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Performance. The song's famous and surreal music video was a massive success at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards, where it was nominated for five awards and won two for Best Alternative Video and Best Art Direction in a Video.
Kurt Cobain died by suicide on April 5, 1994, at the age of 27 at his home in Seattle, Washington. His death occurred during a severe personal crisis, following a long and well-documented struggle with severe clinical depression, chronic stomach pain, and a debilitating addiction to heroin. Just weeks prior, he had survived an accidental drug overdose in Rome and had briefly checked into a rehabilitation center in Los Angeles before leaving and returning to Seattle. His body was discovered three days later, on April 8, 1994, by an electrician who had arrived to install a security system, alongside a suicide note addressed to his childhood imaginary friend, Boddah. Cobain's tragic death profoundly impacted the music world, leading to the immediate dissolution of Nirvana and cementing his legacy as one of the most influential and tragic figures in rock history.

Heart-Shaped Box Guitar Lesson - Nirvana
In this quick Heart Shaped Box guitar lesson video, I will show you all of Kurt Cobain's guitar parts to this much loved Nirvana classic note-for-note.
You will need to tune your guitar to dropped "C#" tuning, which is basically a guitar tuned a half-step down that then has the 6th string lowered another full-step. The exact notes will be starting from the 6th string (C# G# C# F# A# D#) or if your tuner displays flats instead of sharps you will tune to the notes (Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb). Either way those are the same exact notes.
