Todays song is Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver. John Denver (born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr.) was one of the most commercially successful and beloved American singer-songwriters, actors, and activists of the 1970s. Known for his signature acoustic guitar, wire-rimmed glasses, and bowl haircut, Denver became the clean-cut face of the 1970s folk-pop movement, selling over 33 million records worldwide. His music celebrated the beauty of nature, the joys of rural life, and a deep sense of environmental nostalgia, earning him the title of the Poet Laureate of Colorado. Beyond his massive musical legacy, Denver was an avid pilot and a deeply committed humanitarian, co-founding The Hunger Project and dedicating much of his later life to environmental conservation before tragically passing away in a solo plane crash in 1997.

This song was released on April 12, 1971, as the lead single from his breakout album Poems, Prayers & Promises, the timeless country-folk anthem peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track is globally famous for its vivid, nostalgic imagery of West Virginia—famously branding the state as "Almost Heaven". However, a famous piece of music trivia is that the song's primary writers, Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert, had never actually been to West Virginia when they wrote the bulk of it. 

They grew up in Massachusetts and Washington D.C., and the initial inspiration actually hit Danoff while he was driving down Clopper Road in neighboring Maryland. When they met up with John Denver in December 1970 to finish the track, they chose "West Virginia" simply because its four syllables fit the melodic rhythm perfectly. Furthermore, the geographical landmarks mentioned in the opening line—the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah River—primarily run through Virginia and Maryland, only grazing a tiny sliver of West Virginia.

Despite the geographical inconsistencies, the state of West Virginia enthusiastically embraced the track. It was officially adopted as one of the state's official state songs. The song serves as the ultimate anthem for West Virginia University, where it has been blast-played at every home football pregame show since 1972, culminating in a tradition where fans lock arms and sing it together after every home victory.
