Todays song is Royals by Lorde. Lorde (Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor) is a New Zealand singer-songwriter. Fascinated by royals, aristocracy, and the concept of majesty since childhood, she chose the moniker "Lord," but felt it was a bit too masculine on its own. To soften it and add a feminine touch, she added an "e" at the end to create Lorde. She prefers keeping her stage persona separate from her private life as Ella.
Lorde was discovered at the age of 12 by an A&R talent scout after he saw a video of her performing a cover of Duffy's "Warwick Avenue" at a school talent show. She signed a development deal with Universal Music Group shortly after, using those early teenage years to hone her songwriting skills. Lorde experiences a harmless neurological phenomenon known as chromesthesia, where hearing certain musical notes or frequencies triggers a visual perception of specific colors. When writing Pure Heroine, she arranged and structured songs based on making the "colors" in her mind look correct together.
This song was released as a commercial standalone single on June 3, 2013. Before its official radio and international release, Lorde had initially self-released the song for free download on her SoundCloud account on November 22, 2012, as part of The Love Club EP. It was later included on her debut studio album, Pure Heroine, in September 2013
Written by Lorde and producer Joel Little when she was just 15 years old, the minimalist art-pop and electropop song became a massive global phenomenon, spending nine consecutive weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and winning two Grammy Awards in 2014, including Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
So let's learn this one together, the ASL version and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Plus check out the bonus covers. Let's get in to it.
