Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc. (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

Todays song is Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz. Gorillaz is a unique musical project divided between a real-world creative duo and a fictional, four-piece animated band. The band was created in 1998 by Damon Albarn (the frontman of the iconic British alt-rock band Blur), who handles all the music and vocals, and Jamie Hewlett (the co-creator of the famous comic book Tank Girl), who designs the band's distinctive animation, storylines, and visual artwork. In the band's extensive fictional lore, Gorillaz consists of four cartoon members: 2-D (the blue-haired, sweet-natured lead singer), Murdoc Niccals (the cynical, green-skinned bassist and self-proclaimed leader), Noodle (the Japanese guitar prodigy), and Russel Hobbs (the hip-hop-loving American drummer who is occasionally possessed by ghosts).

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett came up with the concept for Gorillaz while sharing an apartment in London in 1998. One evening, while sitting on their couch watching MTV, they grew incredibly frustrated by the lack of substance, manufactured nature, and repetitive imagery of the music videos on the air. Realizing that any group could be marketed if the image was flashy enough, they decided to create a "virtual band" as a commentary on the shallow nature of celebrity culture—allowing them to make whatever genre of music they wanted without the burden of being in the spotlight themselves.

When it came to picking a name, they originally called the project "Gorilla" (written in the singular). They chose the name simply because both Albarn and Hewlett were born in 1968, which was the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese zodiac. They felt the primate imagery perfectly captured their desired raw, uninhibited, and slightly chaotic aesthetic. As the project evolved and they began fleshing out the fictional animated band members, they added a stylized twist to the spelling, officially changing it to the plural Gorillaz.

This song was released on May 9, 2005, as the lead single for their multi-platinum sophomore album Demon Days, the track became a global juggernaut. Driven by one of the most recognizable basslines in modern rock history, it spent eight consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and officially crossed the one billion views milestone on YouTube.

Despite its danceable groove, infectious acoustic guitar bridges, and chaotic background laughter, the track carries a dark, dystopian message. Co-creators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett wrote the track as a scathing critique of a dumbed-down, media-controlled mass culture. The titular "Feel Good Inc." represents a corporate prison of superficial pleasure—addiction, consumerism, and artificial entertainment. The song's structure sets up a stark psychological conflict: the verses portray a numb, brainwashed society going through empty cycles, while Albarn's somber chorus ("Windmill, windmill for the land...") serves as a melancholy prayer for creative autonomy and genuine freedom.

I'll admit this one might be a bit challenging but let's try to learn this one together, the ASL version and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Plus check out the bonus covers. Let's get in to it.
