I’ve been a Weird Al Yankovic fan ever since I bought his Even Worse album way back in 1988. Over the decades, Al has cemented himself as the undisputed king of musical parody, selling millions of albums and outlasting many of the actual pop stars he originally lampooned. Born Alfred Matthew Yankovic, he got his start in the late 1970s recording accordion-heavy song parodies on a cheap cassette recorder in his bedroom, mailing them into Dr. Demento’s eccentric radio show. From those humble, quirky beginnings, he built a legendary multi-decade musical career. He eventually transitioned into Hollywood, first starring in the 1989 cult classic comedy UHF, before making a grand return to the silver screen with his own highly anticipated biopic.
I was pleasantly surprised when the film, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story was released for streaming on friday November 4th 2022. I was actively looking for a new movie to watch, and this ended up being the perfect choice. In true form, the movie hit all the right places in true parody fashion. Instead of delivering a standard, serious Hollywood biography, Al co-wrote a brilliant, hyper-exaggerated "mockumentary" that completely skewers the typical, dramatic tropes of celebrity biopics.
Yes, absolutely nothing in the movie was 100% accurate—from his completely fabricated, scandalous whirlwind romance with Madonna to an over-the-top fictionalized battle against international drug cartel lords—BUT it sure was incredibly entertaining and fun to watch! Daniel Radcliffe delivers a phenomenal, completely dedicated performance as Al, matching the musician's real-life zany energy perfectly. If you're a "Weird Al" fan, this is an absolute must-watch movie. And hey, if you're not a fan yet, that's okay too—I'm not judging! Let’s get into it.
