John Mayer - Gravity (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)


Todays song is Gravity by John Mayer. John Mayer is a 7x Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and guitarist who redefined the landscape of 2000s pop and modern blues. He initially broke out in 2001 with acoustic pop hits like "Your Body Is a Wonderland" and "Daughters," which earned him massive commercial success but left him craving deeper musical credibility. Driven to prove his technical prowess, he pivoted sharply toward electric blues, forming the John Mayer Trio and releasing Continuum, an album that permanently cemented his reputation as one of the premier guitarists of his generation. 

Over his multi-decade career, this chameleonic icon has effortlessly hopped between genres—ranging from country-folk on Born and Raised to synthesized 80s pop on Sob Rock—and since 2015, he has also served as the lead guitarist for Dead & Company, a wildly successful touring outfit consisting of former Grateful Dead members, introducing his virtuosic style to a completely new generation of fans.

This song debuted live in 2005 with the John Mayer Trio, the studio version was released in September 2006 as the centerpiece single from his critically acclaimed, 4x Platinum album Continuum. While "Gravity" sounds like a melancholic slow-burn blues track, Mayer has described it as the most honest song he has ever written. Rather than a romantic breakup ballad, the track serves as a deeply personal prayer and defense mechanism against his own self-destructive tendencies. Mayer uses physical gravity as a metaphor for the dark forces of fame, ego, and complacency that constantly threaten to pull a successful person down. The core lyric—"Gravity is working against me, and wants to bring me down"—reflects his internal struggle to keep his feet on the ground and remain humble as his career skyrocketed.

Though many listeners think the haunting, soulful background vocals on the studio version of "Gravity" are just a highly talented session singer, they actually belong to Alicia Keys. Mayer and Keys had previously collaborated on a live CMT Crossroads special in 2004, and when he was recording Continuum, he invited her into the studio to layer her distinct vocal harmonies over the song's emotional climax.

This is a really good one that I used to strum along to years ago and now I feel like I should learn more of the solo stuff.
