Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

Todays song is Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. The song was composed by the prominent Broadway and Hollywood songwriting team of Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane. While both men officially shared the credit, Hugh Martin was the primary musical architect who crafted its melancholic melody and original structure. It was arranged by Georgie Stoll and performed alongside his orchestra to back the magnificent, iconic lead vocals of Judy Garland for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The classic recording was officially released as a standalone promotional single in November 1944, coinciding perfectly with its cinematic debut in the landmark musical film Meet Me in St. Louis. The timeless melody almost never made it to the public ear. While trying to write a bridge for the first 16 bars of the track, Hugh Martin grew deeply frustrated with the composition, assumed it was a broken and unusable "madrigal-like" tune, and literally threw the sheet music into the studio wastebasket. Fortunately, his partner Ralph Blane had been listening from an adjacent room, recognized its immense potential, and forced Martin to dig through the trash to retrieve it.

The song was originally written with an incredibly bleak, comically depressing tone meant for World War II audiences. The original draft included lines like: "Have yourself a merry little Christmas / It may be your last / Next year we may all be living in the past". Judy Garland vehemently revolted, telling Martin that if she sang something that horrifying to her seven-year-old co-star, Margaret O'Brien, in the scene, the audience would think she was a monster. Martin initially stubbornly refused to alter it, but eventually gave in and wrote the softer film version.

The version most people sing today was actually finalized by Frank Sinatra. When Ol' Blue Eyes went to record the song for his 1957 album A Jolly Christmas, he called up Hugh Martin and complained that the lyric "Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow" was still far too depressing for a festive album. He explicitly commanded Martin to "jolly up" the line for him, prompting the composer to officially rewrite the line into the famous, uplifting lyric: "Hang a shining star upon the highest bough."
