Today's song is Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. The band was formed in London in 1965, and Pink Floyd is one of the most culturally significant and commercially successful progressive rock acts in music history. They pioneered psychedelic audio engineering, deep philosophical concept albums, and revolutionary live visual spectacles. The song was released on their legendary 1979 double-album The Wall. It is a masterpiece exploring emotional alienation, psychological trauma, and the state of complete mental detachment.
The song is completely autobiographical. Roger Waters wrote the lyrics based on an incident during their 1977 In the Flesh tour. Fighting a severe, painful case of hepatitis, a doctor aggressively injected Waters with tranquilizers and muscle relaxants right before a stadium show in Philadelphia. Waters described performing in that state as "the longest two hours of my life," unable to physically feel his body yet forced to carry out the capitalist obligations of stardom
This song has been on my list since I started playing guitar so many years ago. Back then I felt like I wasn't good enough to tackle this song, so I gave up, until now.
