This is one of my favorite songs of all time. Riviera Paradise by Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble. Driven by the virtuoso guitar playing of Stevie Ray Vaughan (SRV), the group is widely credited with single-handedly igniting the massive commercial blues revival of the 1980s, seamlessly bridging the gap between traditional raw Delta blues and heavy stadium rock. Before Vaughan's tragic, unexpected passing in a August 1990 helicopter crash at age 35, the band recorded four multi-platinum studio albums, won multiple Grammy Awards, and was later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
This song was released on June 6, 1989. The nearly nine-minute instrumental masterpiece serves as the elegant, deeply moving closing track on Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's fourth and final studio album, In Step. The foundational magic of the track happened almost entirely on a spontaneous whim at Kiva Studios in Memphis. After wrapping up a grueling, full day of tracking other album material, Stevie asked producer Jim Gaines to dim the studio lights completely and leave the tape machines running. Alone in the dark, isolated with his amplifiers, he poured out the guitar track in a single pass on his Fender Stratocaster.
Once the tape started rolling, the band locked into an unrepeatable, dreamlike flow. Four minutes quickly dissolved into seven, then eight. In the control booth, a panicked Gaines began frantically waving his arms and signaling for the band to wrap up the song before the tape completely ran off the reel. Because Stevie was deep in the zone with his back turned to the glass, he couldn't see the warnings.
Just as the tape was inches from running out, Chris Layton caught the producer's eye, realized the emergency, and managed to flag down Stevie. The band smoothly brought the composition to an organic, beautiful end—and literally seconds later, the recording reel completely ran out of tape. That narrow, single-take miracle is the exact performance preserved on the multi-platinum record.
So I have to share this... Check out how to play it on Guitar, Ukulele and Piano... Let's get to it:
