Todays song is Drive by Incubus. The band originally formed in Calabasas, California, in 1991. The classic lineup behind Make Yourself features Brandon Boyd (lead vocals), Mike Einziger (guitar), Dirk Lance (bass), José Pasillas (drums), and Chris Kilmore (turntables/DJ). When the band members first formed the group in high school, they spent years gigging without a name. Hours before their very first backyard party gig, the promoter frantically demanded a moniker for the promotional flyer. Scrambling under intense pressure, guitarist Mike Einziger flipped open a physical dictionary and stopped at "Incubus"—a mythological male demon said to haunt and seduce sleeping women. The teenage band members thought the definition was hilarious simply because it contained the word "sex," choosing it strictly as a temporary placeholder name. They fully intended to rename the band a few weeks later, but the flyer circulated, the buzz grew, and they got stuck with it permanently.
The song was released as a single on November 14, 2000. The track first debuted as the crown jewel of Incubus's double-platinum third studio album, Make Yourself, which hit shelves on October 26, 1999. The acoustic-driven ballad marked a monumental shift for the band, catapulting them from underground alt-metal favorites into mainstream global rock icons.
The track became a certified phenomenon, climbing to No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and reaching No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2001. The song's massive legacy was permanently sealed by its iconic, time-lapse music video directed by Phil Harder. Winning Modern Rock Single of the Year at the 2001 Billboard Music Awards, the video features a stunningly creative concept based on M.C. Escher's Drawing Hands, showcasing Brandon Boyd meticulously sketching a surreal, animated version of himself.
