Todays song is Be Alright by Dean Lewis. Born Dean Lewis Loaney, the singer decided early in his career to drop his last name for his musical project. He felt that "Dean Lewis" sounded cleaner, punched harder, and was much easier for international audiences to remember and pronounce as he began releasing his music outside of Australia.
Lewis didn't grow up playing music from early childhood. He was inspired to pick up the guitar and learn how to write songs at the late age of 18 after watching a live concert DVD of the British rock band Oasis. He spent the next several years obsessively analyzing Noel Gallagher's songwriting style to teach himself the craft. Before his music career exploded, Lewis worked behind the scenes in the entertainment industry as a television sound engineer and camera operator. He spent years working on live sports broadcasts and reality television sets in Australia while quietly writing songs in his bedroom at night.
This song was released as a single on June 29, 2018. It served as the lead single for his debut studio album, A Place We Knew, which was later released in March 2019. The heartbreaking narrative of the song—dealing with a partner's infidelity and a friend telling you that you will eventually heal—is deeply personal. Lewis revealed that the lyrics aren't about just one relationship, but are actually a combination of three different past relationships and real conversations he had with his brother and friends during those breakups.
When Lewis first brought the demo to his record label, there was a major disagreement about how the song should sound. Producers and executives wanted to speed up the track and turn it into a high-energy, electronic dance-pop song to fit modern radio trends. Lewis fought hard to keep it a slow, acoustic, stripped-back ballad, insisting that the emotional weight of the story would be completely lost otherwise
This is a good one. So let's learn this one together, the ASL version and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Plus check out the bonus covers. Let's get in to it.
