Todays song is Sweet Jane by Cowboy Junkies / Velvet underground / Lou Reed. Cowboy Junkies formed in Toronto, Canada in 1985. The band is a tight-knit family affair, consisting of three siblings—Michael Timmins (guitar/songwriter), Margo Timmins (vocals), and Peter Timmins (drums)—alongside their lifelong friend Alan Anton (bass). When the group first formed, they wanted a name that would prepare audiences for a heavy, slow, and unusual sound. They juxtaposed two entirely conflicting archetypes: "Cowboy" (evoking traditional, rural country/western roots music) and "Junkie" (evoking urban grit, darkness, and slow, druggy pacing). The name perfectly described their genre-blurring cocktail of alternative country, blues, and ambient folk-rock.
This song released by the Cowboy Junkies on their landmark second studio album, The Trinity Session, on November 15, 1988. The track is a reimagining of the classic 1970 rock anthem written by Lou Reed for The Velvet Underground. While Reed's original version was a driving, upbeat song celebrating the beauty of a normal, 9-to-5 working-class life, the Cowboy Junkies took a completely different approach. Lou Reed famously declared the Cowboy Junkies' version as "the best and most authentic version I have ever heard". He noted that hearing them restore his beloved bridge finally healed a decades-old musical wound for him.
This is such a cool song worth learning. So let's learn this one together, the ASL version I'm still looking for. So lets start with Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Plus check out the bonus covers. Let's get in to it.
