Todays song is Fell On Black Days By Soundgarden. Soundgarden was an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984, and they are widely revered as one of the "Big Four" architects of the 1990s grunge movement alongside Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. While the band saw a few early shifts, their definitive and most famous four-piece lineup consisted of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd (who joined in 1990), and drummer Matt Cameron (who joined in 1986).

Their unique name was inspired by a public, wind-activated kinetic art installation in Seattle called A Garden of Sound, located on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) property next to Magnuson Park. The installation features a collection of tall steel tower structures with pipes that produce eerie, haunting, and droning musical sounds whenever the wind channels through them. The trio thought the concept was fascinating, beautiful, and slightly ominous, which perfectly mirrored the heavy, psychedelic rock sound they wanted to build. 

This song was released in 1994 as the fifth and final single from their monumental, 6x Platinum album Superunknown. It peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and cemented its place as one of the most critically acclaimed tracks in grunge history. Unlike many rock songs that anchor their grief to a specific tragedy like a breakup, an accident, or a death, "Fell on Black Days" explores a much more insidious form of mental illness. 

Cornell wrote the song about the terrifying, unprovoked arrival of existential depression. He described it as the exact feeling of waking up one morning when everything in your life is circumstantially going great—your career is thriving, your relationships are fine—and suddenly realizing, with absolute certainty, that you are profoundly and deeply unhappy. The opening lines capture this bleak paradigm shift: "Just when every day seemed to greet me with a smile / Sunspots have faded and now I'm doing time."

Chris Cornell tragically passed away on May 18, 2017, at the age of 52. He died by suicide in his Detroit hotel room following a Soundgarden concert, leaving the music community in profound shock. His legacy endures through his legendary vocal work and Soundgarden's posthumous induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

In this video lesson we are going to take an in-depth look at Soundgarden's biggest hit "Black Hole Sun". This song is full of rarely used guitar chords and some cool techniques as well. In this Black Hole Sun guitar lesson, we are going to learn how to play all of them. First though, just as I state in the video lesson, you will need to tune your guitar to dropped "D" tuning (DADGBE). Also, the original recording is about a 1/4 step sharp. So if you want to play along with the original recording you will have to adjust for that. The intro starts with a series of arpeggio picked dropped "D" chord voicings. These chords make a for beautiful and melodic chord sequence and really help set the tone for the rest of the song. From there the verse is made up of a cool triad based progression played in the high register of the guitar. Here you will need to pay close attention to the phrasing of those arpeggio picked notes. It creates a very atmospheric sound along with the effects. This is also a great exercise due to the awkward chord voicings. The chorus is similar to the intro but requires you to also play a maj-sus4 barre chord transition that can be a bit tricky. The rhythm guitar part to the solo uses some cool hammer-ons and slides, but will probably be the easiest section of the song for you to learn. I would put the level of this song at around an intermediate level due to it's awkward chord voicings and upper register triad usage. But I also think it would be a great exercise for just about any level player. Have Fun!
