Todays artist is Billy Strings and he is reinventing the sounds of Bluegrass. Bluegrass is a distinct genre of American roots music, and Billy Strings is its premier 21st-century superstar. Together, they represent the absolute collision of deep-rooted American musical tradition and high-energy modern rock showmanship. Bluegrass developed in the 1940s in the Appalachian region of the United States. It is named directly after a pioneering band: Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys (named for Monroe's home state of Kentucky, the "Bluegrass State."
Billy Strings (born William Lee Apostol in 1992) is a virtuoso guitarist, singer, and songwriter who has single-handedly revolutionized acoustic roots music. He has earned multiple consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Bluegrass Album and routinely sells out massive sports arenas—an unprecedented feat for an acoustic bluegrass musician. Raised in a small town in Michigan, his biological father passed away from a drug overdose when Billy was an infant. He was raised by his mother and his stepfather, Terry Barber, a talented amateur picker who taught Billy how to play traditional bluegrass on a $25 guitar at age four. Witnessing his uncanny speed and precision as a child, his aunt presciently nicknamed him "Billy Strings".
