Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

 

Todays song is Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. The band originally formed in Dundee, Scotland, in 1994 by students who hailed from Northern Ireland. The classic lineup behind Eyes Open featured Gary Lightbody (lead vocals/guitar), Nathan Connolly (guitar), Paul Wilson (bass), Jonny Quinn (drums), and Tom Simpson (keyboards). Long before they were stadium-rock icons, the musicians spent years grinding under different identities. They initially gigged as Shrug, but were forced to rebrand when an American act threatened legal action. They next changed their name to Polarbear, releasing an early EP under the moniker. However, the indie-rock band Polar Bear (led by Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery) issued a cease-and-desist, forcing them into another sudden identity change.

This song was released as a single on June 6, 2006. It served as the monumental second single from Snow Patrol’s multi-platinum fourth studio album, Eyes Open. The anthem went on to become one of the most culturally significant rock ballads of the 21st century, eventually being named the most-played song on UK radio of the 21st century.

While already a modest success in the UK, the track achieved astronomical global immortality in May 2006. The song was featured over the devastating, season-two finale montage of the hit medical drama series Grey's Anatomy, where character Izzie Stevens grieves over Denny Duquette. The cinematic pairing sent the track straight to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, transforming an indie-rock band into a global multi-platinum staple.

Ice Cube - It Was A Good Day / The Isley Brothers - Footsteps In The Dark (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)


Todays song is It Was A Good Day by Ice Cube. Technically the beat was sampled from the song Footsteps In The Dark by The Isley Brothers so this is a two for one song. Ice Cube (born O'Shea Jackson) is legendary American rapper, songwriter, actor, film producer, and entrepreneur. Widely celebrated as one of the definitive founding architects of gangsta rap and West Coast hip-hop, he has seamlessly transitioned from a fiercely anti-establishment street lyricist into a highly bankable Hollywood monolith and sports executive. 

He was born and raised in a tough neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles. Ice Cube began writing rhymes as a young teenager before joining forces with Eazy-E and Dr. Dre to form the revolutionary group N.W.A in 1987. As the group's lead rapper and main lyricist, he penned the explosive, boundary-pushing verses behind their 1988 landmark album  Straight Outta Compton. 

Ice Cube's It Was A Good Day was released as a single on February 23, 1993. It served as the blockbusting second single from his multi-platinum third studio album, The Predator. Produced by DJ Pooh, the track is not a re-recorded cover; it utilizes a direct, loop-style sample of Ernie Isley’s exact 1977 drum beat and acoustic guitar progression from "Footsteps in the Dark." The airy, laid-back quality of the Isley Brothers' instrumentation acts as the perfect, soothing counterweight to Cube's gritty storytelling.
