The Music of "The Recycled Orchestra"

Recycled Orchestra / Landfill Harmonic

In 2013 I wrote about the Music of "The Recycled Orchestra" on my Surf tab under a segment I call "Eat Your Vegetables." Because when I was a kid I didn't like to eat my vegetables. At the time I didn't see a need for them. I used to joke to my mom that I would catch up on eating all my vegetables at our next Thanksgiving dinner which of course was months away. I understand now that my mom wanted me to be healthy and vegetables are good for me. This segment is about eating your vegetables, well mentally. The vegetables that I'll be dishing out to you are for your own good. It's a dose of getting exposed to something that might be new to most of you, even outside of the usual surf culture. It's ok if you don't like it, but like my mom said,"at least give it a try before next Thanksgiving."

I encourage you to support creativity like this wether it's for this group of kids of some other person who is trying to make our world a little better. Please take a look at this great story about a creative group of people that have transformed a small town with music.

The world sends us garbage, we send back music: Favio Chavez at TEDxAmsterdam

Favio Chávez worked as an ecological technician at the largest garbage dump in Asunción, Paraguay. There he became aware that especially the children of the recyclers needed something positive. One man's trash is another man's music and now, children in his music education programme learn to make instruments from recycling material and, in those instruments they play Mozart and Beethoven, just like any other music student around the world. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Landfill harmonic

Landfill Harmonic is an upcoming feature-length documentary about a remarkable musical orchestra in Paraguay, where the musicians play instruments made from trash
Cateura, Paraguay is a town essentially built on top of a landfill. Garbage collectors browse the trash for sellable goods, and children are often at risk of getting involved with drugs and gangs. When orchestra director Szaran and music teacher Fabio set up a music program for the kids of Cateura, they soon have more students than they have instruments.

That changed when Szaran and Fabio were brought something they had never seen before: a violin made out of garbage. Today, there's an entire orchestra of assembled instruments, now called The Recycled Orchestra.

This film shows how trash and recycled materials can be transformed into beautiful sounding musical instruments, but more importantly, it brings witness to the transformation of precious human beings.
