Todays song is Where Is My Mind by the Pixies. The band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1986. The legendary original lineup consisted of Black Francis (vocals/guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass/vocals), and David Lovering (drums). Together, they effectively pioneered the "quiet-loud-quiet" musical formula that defined 1990s alternative rock.
This song was released on March 21, 1988. Surprisingly, it was never released as a commercial single. Instead, it originally debuted as the seventh track on their raw, low-budget first full-length studio album, Surfer Rosa. Frontman Black Francis wrote the track after going scuba diving while on a trip to the Caribbean. As he swam, a very small, aggressive fish unexpectedly began chasing and nipping at him. The bizarre, disorienting experience out in the open water inspired the song's vivid opening imagery: "With your feet in the air and your head on the ground... Way out in the water, see it swimmin'."
Despite being an underground college-radio favorite, the song didn't achieve widespread global fame until 1999. Director David Fincher placed the track over the legendary, building-collapsing final scene of his cult masterpiece movie,Fight Club. The cinematic pairing permanently transformed the 1988 deep-cut into an immortal, multi-platinum generational anthem.
I first heard this song back in my early college days. So let's learn this song together on ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, & Piano. Plus there's some great bonus covers. Let's get in to it.
