Patsy Cline - Walkin' After Midnight (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

Todays song is Walkin' After Midnight by Patsy Cline.  Patsy Cline (born Virginia Patterson Hensley) was an absolute trailblazer and solo icon of country music. She became one of the first female country artists to cross over successfully into the mainstream pop charts and headline her own shows. Patsy didn't choose her iconic stage name out of thin air. Her first name came from her middle name, Patterson, which local musicians shortened to "Patsy." Her famous surname came from her first husband, Gerald Cline.

This song was released as a single on February 11, 1957. It serves as the opening track of her self-titled debut studio album, Patsy Cline. The track is a bluesy, late-night narrative about intense longing and romantic loss. The narrator walks miles down a lonely highway and through a dark city, obsessively searching for a lover who has left her. Patsy Cline did not want to record "Walkin' After Midnight". She considered herself a strict country honky-tonk singer and dismissed the track as a "silly pop song". Her label forced her into a compromise: she agreed to record it only if they also allowed her to record "A Poor Man's Roses (Or a Rich Man's Gold)," a traditional country ballad she genuinely loved.

My mom is learning this song on ukulele so I figured I should learn it too. So let's learn this one together. The ASL version and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Plus check out the bonus covers. Let's get to in it.

Today we are going to learn how to play "Walkin' After Midnight" by Patsy Cline on the Ukulele. We are trying something new today and we have included the tabs for the melody as well. By learning the melody you will be able to play this song with friends in a duet style if you want to, you can also learn the melody as well to help you to learn to sing it the same as Patsy. One of the best ways to improve your singing for a song is to learn how to play the melody for the song.

Theory wise Patsy does some really cool things outside of the diantonic scale, primarily a lot of the minor 3rd. She sings the Eb quite a bit, so the F chord, the 4 chord, gets pushed to a dominant F7 instead of Fmaj7 to accommodate for the minor 3rd, giving it a really cool, soulful, melancholy blues vibe.

I’m out here ~rebranding~ I recently left a demanding career to pursue a gentler life, one filled with more music and passion projects. As I share more of my music and start to play shows, I decided I’d like some distance from my ~legal name~. There’s something nice about putting on a character when sharing the vulnerable parts of yourself. So, here’s introducing Moe Reen (a play on my middle name)
