Todays song is Otherside by Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1983. They uniquely blended heavy punk rock, slap-bass funk, and psychedelic rock. The classic, definitive lineup consists of Kiedis (vocals), Flea (bass), John Frusciante (guitar), and Chad Smith (drums). Californication marked a monumental era for the band. Guitarist John Frusciante had quit the band years prior and fell into a near-fatal drug addiction himself. After getting clean, Flea invited him back to the band in 1998. Reunited in Flea's garage, the re-energized group traded their wild, hyperactive funk energy for a more mature, beautifully melodic, and vulnerable alternative rock sound.
This song was released as a single on January 11, 2000, though it first became available to the public on June 8, 1999, on their landmark seventh studio album, Californication. Anthony Kiedis wrote the track as a mournful tribute to the band's founding guitarist and close childhood friend, Hillel Slovak. Slovak tragically died of a heroin overdose in 1988, an event that shattered the band and permanently altered their trajectory.
So I woke this morning with this song stuck in my head. Maybe that was a sign to learn this one together. The ASL version and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano too. Plus check out the bonus covers too. Let's get in to it.

Warning: Ambiguous lyrics. Wasn't able to sign some of the deeper meanings behind the lyrics because they had multiple meanings, or unknown meanings. Interpreted what I could, just signed the rest :)

Was originally just gonna do a vocal cover but I decided to re-write it all in the style of a post-hardcore track, as much as I could without losing the core of the track. Hope you enjoy!
