The Disturbingly Beautiful Sound Of Silence (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

In my 12th grade English class my teacher played two versions of the song Sound Of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel on an old record player. He asked the class to play close attention to each song and share what was different between the two versions. It turned out that the second version had drums added to it, but the class didn't discovered that without help from our teacher.

What I love about this song is that it's interpretation is nearly endless. It can sung softly like in the original drumless version by Simon & Garfunkel. Or it can be a shared with deep rage like the one by Disturbed. Or with thick feeling like the one by Michael Scott. Or layered with many tones and voices like the version by Pentatonix.

So I've collected a few lessons so we can learn this song together on Guitar, ukulele, Piano, and ASL. Plus I threw in some bonus videos in there just because they were too good to pass up...

How do you see, and feel this song in your mind? (comment below)

ASL Sound of Silence

Disturbed did a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's song "Sound of Silence" This song instantly spoke to me and the message I took away from it really made me think. I knew I had to interpret it. I hope you enjoy it.

You can also visit my website @ www.jsfmusicacademy.com This is a tutorial as well as a play-along video for you to master playing one of Disturbed's biggest hits named "The Sound of Silence". The video features the chords used in the song and the strumming pattern so you can get a clear understanding of how to play it. I've tried to keep the video to its basic level so that anyone who watches it can start playing with it. The original chords used in the song are based out of the F#m scale, most of which are bar chords. In order to simplify them, I've used the capo on the 2nd fret which turned the scale to Em. And also to make sure that there are not many complications on the right hand, I have used the basic 4/4 strumming pattern throughout the song. Sounds easy now right??

The enchanting music of sign language | Christine Sun Kim

Artist Christine Sun Kim was born deaf, and she was taught to believe that sound wasn't a part of her life, that it was a hearing person's thing. Through her art, she discovered similarities between American Sign Language and music, and she realized that sound doesn't have to be known solely through the ears — it can be felt, seen and experienced as an idea. In this endearing talk, she invites us to open our eyes and ears and participate in the rich treasure of visual language.

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir

I discovered Eric Whitacre back in 2003 when I was hacking around looking for new music. I'm really not that big of a fan for choir style music, but this type I do like. I really like the idea of people connecting from all over the world in a collaborative effort to create music. The collaboration has continued to grow from 2000 people to 17,572. I can only imagine what it could be like in another 10 years as communication and technology advances. Check it out:

Eric Whitacre: Virtual Choir Live (Mar 22, 2013)

Composer and conductor Eric Whitacre has inspired millions by bringing together "virtual choirs," singers from many countries spliced together on video. Now, for the first time ever, he creates the experience in real time, as 32 singers from around the world Skype in to join an onstage choir (assembled from three local colleges) for an epic performance of Whitacre's "Cloudburst," based on a poem by Octavio Paz.
