In my 12th grade English class my teacher played two versions of the song Sound Of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel on an old record player. He asked the class to play close attention to each song and share what was different between the two versions. It turned out that the second version had drums added to it, but the class didn't discovered that without help from our teacher.
What I love about this song is that it's interpretation is nearly endless. It can sung softly like in the original drumless version by Simon & Garfunkel. Or it can be a shared with deep rage like the one by Disturbed. Or with thick feeling like the one by Michael Scott. Or layered with many tones and voices like the version by Pentatonix.
So I've collected a few lessons so we can learn this song together on Guitar, ukulele, Piano, and ASL. Plus I threw in some bonus videos in there just because they were too good to pass up...

The video features the chords used in the song and the strumming pattern so you can get a clear understanding of how to play it. I've tried to keep the video to its basic level so that anyone who watches it can start playing with it. The original chords used in the song are based out of the F#m scale, most of which are bar chords. In order to simplify them, I've used the capo on the 2nd fret which turned the scale to Em. And also to make sure that there are not many complications on the right hand, I have used the basic 4/4 strumming pattern throughout the song. Sounds easy now right??
