Song of Lahore - The Underground World of Pakistan's Jazz

The first music concert I went to was a jazz concert in a little club called "The Strand" in southern California (in the late 80's early 90's). I was there to see Wynton Marsalis, a remarkable trumpet player, and I wanted to listen to live jazz. That's when I discovered jazz is a gateway drug, it has a way of creating a lifelong addiction to music. The love for jazz can be so strong that drastic measures were required in Pakistan when western music was banned, even jazz was off limits.  This post is about Pakistan, their music story, and their beautiful addiction to jazz.

John Coltrane: My Favourite Things - East meets West -

John Coltrane's interpretation was influenced by music from the Indian subcontinent. This tribute therefore makes total sense. The Sachal Jazz ensemble from Lahore, Pakistan and the Wynton Marsalis quintet at The Marciac jazz festival, July 2013. #Makejazznotwar! The magic in this arrangement for me is Baqir Abbas on flute! #BaqirAbbas #Bansuri #JohnColtrane #myfavouritethings #Jazz #eastmeetswest
