Alongside her brother Finneas, Eilish broke out at just 13 years old when their independent track "Ocean Eyes" went viral on SoundCloud. They recorded her record-shattering, diamond-certified debut album, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? (2019), entirely inside Finneas's childhood bedroom. Her signature style—a mix of dark, industrial electronic beats, horror-movie aesthetics, and intimate, ASMR-like whispered vocals—made her the youngest artist ever to sweep the four major Grammy categories in a single night.

The song was officially released on January 30, 2019, as the third single from her blockbuster debut studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Billie Eilish revealed that the song is written entirely from the perspective of the monster hiding under her bed. However, the ultimate twist of the lyricism is that the monster under the bed is actually Billie herself. The track serves as a deep dive into her own night terrors, sleep paralysis, and self-sabotaging thoughts, exploring how she can be her own worst enemy.

Finneas constructed the dark, claustrophobic soundscape using real-world "found sounds" rather than standard synthesizers. To give listeners the unsettling feeling of being trapped in a hospital or an asylum, the backing track explicitly features the screech of a dentist’s drill, a stapler snapping, a kitchen timer ticking, and the sharp sound of glass shattering.
