Todays song is Set Fire To the Rain by Adele. Born Adele Adkins in Tottenham, London, Adele is a generational vocal powerhouse and one of the best-selling music artists of all time, celebrated for her raw, unfiltered emotional transparency and her rejection of high-gloss pop trends in favor of timeless soul. Adele famously names her studio albums after the specific age she was when she wrote them—19 (her indie-soul debut), 21 (the diamond-certified breakthrough that swept the Grammys), 25 (featuring "Hello"), and 30 (her 2021 album processing her divorce from Simon Konecki).
This song was released in 2011 as the powerhouse third single from her historic album 21. It is a sweeping pop-soul ballad about the agony of a deceptive, toxic relationship and the bittersweet liberation of destroying it completely. Like much of the album, the song was written in the painful aftermath of Adele's first major heartbreak. The song relies on an impossible, paradoxical metaphor to articulate a storm of unresolved emotions.
The phrase "set fire to the rain" serves as a striking paradox. Adele has explained that the phrase literally materialized in her mind after a painful argument with her then-boyfriend outside a restaurant. She stepped out to smoke and found it impossible to light a cigarette in the pouring rain. That sense of absolute futility stayed with her. Figuratively, the "rain" represents the flood of tears, grief, and lies drowning the relationship, while the "fire" is her rage and her decisive choice to burn the connection to the ground to liberate herself
Let's learn this one together on guitar, ukulele, ASL and Piano. Plus there are many hand picked bonus cover songs at the end that I hope inspire you to sing along. Let's get in to it.
