John Mellencamp - Jack & Diane (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

Todays song is Jack & Diane By John Mellencamp. When Mellencamp first signed a record deal, his manager told him his real German surname was "too clunky" for a rock star. Without his knowledge or permission, the label printed his debut album under the flashy, aggressive stage name "Johnny Cougar". Mellencamp absolutely detested the name, feeling like a fake. As he gained leverage, he embarked on a decade-long battle to reclaim his identity—gradually changing his marquee billing to John Cougar Mellencamp in 1983, before finally dropping the "Cougar" entirely in 1991.

This song was released as a single on July 21, 1982. It served as the second single from John Mellencamp’s breakout multi-platinum fifth studio album, American Fool. He initially wrote the song as an interracial love story, where Jack was a Black football star and Diane was a white girl. At the time, his record label fiercely fought the concept, claiming it would destroy his chances of being played on mainstream radio. Feeling cornered by the industry, Mellencamp compromised by making Jack white, a decision he later expressed regret over.

This is a really cool song worth learning. So let's learn this one together, the ASL version and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Plus check out the bonus covers. Let's get in to it.

Gutter Rose covers "Jack and Diane" by John Mellencamp

The trio is tackling the 1982 hit song "Jack and Diane" by John "Cougar" Mellencamp. The song was based on a Tennessee Williams film called "Sweet Bird of Youth" with the original lyrics depicting an interracial couple before the record company made him change them. With Michael and Steve handling the guitars, bass, piano and vocals, Jenna brings a new, hidden talent to the group, beat boxing!

Abracadabra Guitar Lesson - Steve Miller Band

In this easy little video guitar lesson, I will show you how to play the No.1 smash hit "Abracadabra" by the Steve Miller Band. This clever tune uses a simple I-IV-V chord progression in a very catchy almost poppy style. The main guitar riff you will learn in this Abracadabra guitar lesson is very simple and easily approachable by the beginner level guitarist. It is pretty much the same riff taken across a basic I-IV-V progression. A simple as this is, it is extremely effective and helps give the song a lot of movement. The intro of "Abracadabra" introduces this riff over just one chord along with a quick little power chord riff. The main riff enters when the verse vocals begin. This same riff is played during the chorus as well along with a cool Hendrixy E7#9 chord. I skip the guitar solo since it is pretty much studio effects and guitar overdubs. It would be impossible to recreate it with one standard guitar. Steve Miller simply improvises at this part of the song live. After the solo we have a cool extended chord sequence that creates sort of a musical interlude. All of these chords have an open A string in the bass with simple triads on string set 2-4. Even though the chord forms here remain the same much of the time, it may take a few times of viewing this section of the lesson to memorize all the frets the chords occur on. I round out the lesson with a cool little guitar lick that occurs just after the interlude.
