Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody / Six13 - Bohemian Chanukah (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano & More)

Todays song is Bohemian Rhapsody/ Bohemian Chanukah by Queen/ Six13. Queen are one of the most commercially successful, innovative, and influential rock bands in global music history. Formed in London in 1970, the band's classic lineup consisted of Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals). Melding heavy metal, glam rock, camp theater, and intricate operatic vocal harmonies, they transformed the landscape of stadium rock and pop culture forever, selling an estimated 250 million to 300 million records worldwide. The name "Queen" was entirely the brainchild of frontman Freddie Mercury, who had to fight hard to convince his bandmates to adopt it.

At the time, the other members were highly skeptical of the name, fearing it was too controversial, overly eccentric, or carried too many fluid, camp connotations. However, Freddie wouldn't budge. He explained his reasoning perfectly in an early interview, stating: "It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid. It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations." Along with the name change, Freddie legally changed his own surname to Mercury and used his background as a fashion and graphic design student to sketch the iconic Queen Crest logo.

The song Bohemian Rhapsody was released as a single on October 31, 1975. When Queen recorded the famous operatic section ("Galileo! Scaramouche!"), they did not have digital recording software. Freddie Mercury, Brian May, and Roger Taylor sang their parts over and over for weeks, bouncing the audio down onto a single 24-track tape. They layered their voices over 180 times, to the point where the physical recording tape became so worn down it turned literally see-through because the oxide layer was scraping off.

The inclusion of "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the 1992 comedy film Wayne's World is widely credited with introducing Queen to an entirely new generation and sparking a massive, historic American chart resurgence for the song. The film's most iconic moment occurs in the first few minutes when Wayne (Mike Myers), Garth (Dana Carvey), and their friends cram into a 1976 AMC Pacer (the "Mirthmobile") and pop a cassette of A Night at the Opera into the deck. As the operatic section builds to its climax, the entire group engages in a synchronized, neck-snapping headbanging session that perfectly captured the pure joy of listening to rock music with friends.

The scene almost never happened because the studio executives at Paramount Pictures vehemently pushed for a modern grunge or alternative rock song, such as Guns N' Roses, to appeal to 1992 youth culture. Mike Myers completely dug his heels in, famously threatening to walk off the production entirely if they didn't keep Queen. Myers later explained that "Bohemian Rhapsody" was the exact song he and his friends used to headbang to in the car growing up in Toronto, and he refused to compromise on that specific childhood authenticity.

Six13—a prominent six-man Jewish a cappella group from New York City—meticulously mapped the lyrics of Hanukkah's historical narrative perfectly onto Queen's operatic structure. Freddie's dramatic line "Mama, just killed a man" seamlessly became "Mama, opened the holiday..." while the famous multi-tracked "Galileo" section was transformed into a soaring, layered tribute to the brave "Mattathias" and "Judah Maccabee", retelling the story of the miracle of the oil using nothing but their voices.

The timing of the parody's release was pure genius. Six13 dropped the track on social media in late November 2018—the exact same month that Queen's official biographical film Bohemian Rhapsody was dominating movie theaters globally and triggering a massive worldwide wave of Queen nostalgia. The perfect overlap between the holiday season and the theatrical film hype exploded the video's reach, quickly amassing over 3 million viral views in its first few weeks alone

There's a few versions to choose from depending on how far you want to stretch your talents. The chords work for both songs so once you get them down you can use whatever lyrics you want. So let's learn these one together, the ASL versions and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Hi, I'm Scott | Scott Mescudi | TEDxSHHS

Musician Scott Mescudi, aka Kid Cudi, returns to his high school to talk about growing up and his career path in the music industry. Born Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi in Cleveland, Kid Cudi began rapping while attending Shaker Heights High School and later Solon High School. In 2004, Kid Cudi moved to Brooklyn, NY to pursue his rap career. He released his first mixtape, “A Kid Named Cudi,” in 2008. The mixtape earned Kanye West’s attention, leading him to sign Cudi to his GOOD Music imprint. As an up-and-coming artist, Cudi contributed hooks and lyrics to songs by West and Jay-Z, including “Heartless,” “Paranoid” and “Already Home.” These collaborations set the foundation for Kid Cudi’s successful solo career. He signed with Universal Motown in 2009 and released his first full-length album later that year. Cudi earned his first three Grammy Award nominations in 2010, two for his single “Day ‘n’ Nite” and one for the collaboration “Make Her Say.” In 2012, he won two Grammy Awards for “All of the Lights,” a collaboration with West, Rihanna and Fergie.
