Todays song is Under The Milky Way by The Church.  The band formed in Sydney, Australia in 1980. They became legendary pioneers of neo-psychedelia, post-punk, and dream pop, distinctively built around a dual-lead "jangly" 12-string guitar architecture. The core classic lineup consisted of Steve Kilbey (vocals/bass), Peter Koppes (guitar), Marty Willson-Piper (guitar), and Richard Ploog (drums). 

Fun Fact: When the band members originally came together, they spent months trying to find a name that felt evocative without pigeonholing them into a specific genre. They initially gigged briefly under the name The Suburbs. Looking for something more majestic and anonymous, they settled on "The Church" purely because it sounded atmospheric, carried an air of gothic mystery, and didn't scream "punk" or "glam"—despite the musicians having absolutely zero religious affiliation or intent.

This song was officially released as a single on February 15, 1988. It served as the lead promotional track for their breakthrough fifth studio album, Starfish. Frontman Steve Kilbey has explicitly stated that the song isn't literally "about" anything specific. Instead, he conceptualized the abstract, poetic lyrics as a portal or a guided meditation meant for listeners to project their own thoughts and feelings onto.

Under the Milky Way • Guitar lesson w/ chords & tabs (The Church)

Hey friends! In this lesson I'll teach you how to play the 1988 song "Under the Milky Way" by The Church. The song combines slight hints of late 80s New Wave / alt rock sounds, along with multiple acoustic guitars (one of which is a 12-string, another being capo 5). I'll focus my tutorial on a solo acoustic version, played without capo, that best captures the combined sound of everything you hear on the album version. Chord-wise, things are fairly straightforward: A-minor and a few variations, Fmaj7 (easy!), G, and E-minor make up the bulk of what you'll be playing. Strumming can be tricky, but I'll break it down carefully and show a simplified version if you want something more accessible. The Church - Under The Milky Way Guitar Lesson


In this Under the Milky Way guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all the chords to this massive 80's ballad by The Church. The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E. What I am attempting to achieve with this transcription of "Under the Milky Way", is to sort of combine all of the guitar and bass parts into one playable part that sounds like the original recording but that can be played by just one guitarist. On the original recording there is a 12-string acoustic guitar capoed and the 5th fret, along with other non-capoed electric and acoustic guitars playing mostly open position chords. With all of that going on, once the bass guitar enters halfway through the first verse, it changes the harmony quite a bit.
