Todays song is Kiss Me by Six Pence None the Richer. The bond formed in New Braunfels, Texas, in 1992. The creative core of the band centers on the unique dynamic between main songwriter/guitarist Matt Slocum and the angelic vocals of Leigh Nash. The band's distinct name is drawn directly from a passage in the book Mere Christianity by celebrated author C.S. Lewis. The passage describes a small child asking his father for a sixpence to buy the father a gift. The father grants the money, happy with the child's heart, but recognizes he is "none the richer" for the transaction. The band chose it as a humble, faith-rooted reminder that their musical talents are gifts from a higher power.
This song was originally made available to the public on November 22, 1997, on Sixpence None the Richer's self-titled third studio album. Recognizing its massive pop crossover potential, it was officially sent to US modern rock radio as a commercial lead single on July 14, 1998. Guitarist Matt Slocum originally drafted the track inside a Dutch motel while the band was traveling on tour. Lead singer Leigh Nash revealed that early drafts carried slightly sharper imagery; for instance, the sparkling line "silver moon's sparkling" was originally written as "cigarettes sparkling" before they softened it to match the song's whimsical tone.
So let's learn this one together, the ASL version and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Plus check out the bonus covers. Let's get in to it.
