The band’s name was actually a happy accident resulting from a common mishearing. Mark Foster originally chose the name "Foster and the People," placing himself as the central figure with his backing musicians. However, when they played their very first gigs, friends and early fans consistently misheard the name as "Foster the People." Foster quickly realized he preferred the accidental version much more, as it sounded like a call to action or a charity slogan. He officially dropped the "and," shifting the meaning from a simple band description to a compassionate message about supporting, nurturing, and taking care of humanity.
This song was released as a free download in September 2010, the song became a massive sleeper hit, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2011 and transforming the group into alternative pop icons. The song is famous for its extreme sonic juxtaposition: it features an incredibly catchy, upbeat, and whistling indie-pop melody layered over a deeply dark narrative. Written by frontman Mark Foster while he was working as a commercial jingle writer, the lyrics are written from the perspective of a troubled, isolated teenager named Robert. Robert experiences intense homicidal thoughts and plans a school shooting, warning his peers that they "better run, better run, outrun my gun". The phrase "pumped up kicks" refers to expensive, trendy sneakers worn by the more affluent, popular kids at school, serving as a symbol of social division and exclusion.
