Todays song is Fade Into You By Mazzy Star. Mazzy Star was primarily a creative duo consisting of Hope Sandoval (lead vocals, harmonica, tambourine) and David Roback (guitar, keyboard, production). Sadly, David Roback passed away in February 2020 from metastatic cancer, effectively ending the band's run. While other musicians rotated through their touring and recording lineups over the years—including Suki Ewers, Keith Mitchell, and Colm Ó Cíosóig—Sandoval and Roback remained the sole creative engines and defining identity of the group.

The origin of the name "Mazzy Star" has remained one of the most notoriously guarded secrets in alternative rock history due to the band's legendary reclusiveness. Hope Sandoval and David Roback were famous for giving intensely quiet, awkward interviews and consistently refused to explain the exact meaning behind the name. When pressed by journalists, they would simply state that they liked the abstract, celestial imagery it conjured. However, it is widely believed by fans and music historians to be a stylized play on the word "mazy" (meaning a confusing, labyrinth-like maze), paired with "star" to capture the dreamy, drifting, and psychedelic atmosphere of their music.

This song was released in April 1994 as the leading track from their sophomore album So Tonight That I Might See, the haunting dream-pop anthem peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and became the band's only song to break into the mainstream Billboard Hot 100. Written by vocalist Hope Sandoval and guitarist David Roback, the track captures a deeply melancholic view of unrequited love and emotional unavailability. The lyrics tell the story of someone who has completely lost themselves trying to love a person who is empty, closed off, and incapable of reciprocating affection ("I look to you and I see nothing / I look to you to see the truth"). Rather than a traditional romantic ballad, the song is a slow-burn portrait of emotional erasure, where the narrator ends up fading away into the dark, hollow identity of the person they are infatuated with.
