Todays song is Goo Goo Muck by The Cramps. The band formed in New York City in 1976. They were staples of the legendary CBGB punk scene alongside the Ramones and Blondie. They are widely credited with inventing "psychobilly"—a high-octane musical hybrid of 1950s rockabilly and 1970s aggressive punk rock. The band was spearheaded by husband-and-wife duo Lux Interior (vocalist Erick Purkhiser) and Poison Ivy Rorschach (guitarist Kristy Wallace). They chose the name "The Cramps" because they wanted a name that felt shocking, campy, and slightly uncomfortable, perfectly mirroring the retro B-movie horror aesthetics and raw interior tension of their live shows.
This song was originally released as a single by The Cramps on May 8, 1981, just ahead of its inclusion on their second studio album, Psychedelic Jungle.Decades later, the song experienced an astronomical streaming explosion after soundtracking Wednesday Addams' iconic Nevermore Academy dance sequence in Netflix's hit 2022 series Wednesday.
The track is actually a cover of a failed 1962 novelty rock-and-roll song by Ronnie Cook and the Gaylads. In the original 1960s version, the "Goo Goo Muck" was a classic Halloween monster or ghoul roaming the streets looking for victims. The Cramps took the innocent 1960s monster motif and subverted it into a dark, sleazy psychobilly punk anthem. Frontman Lux Interior tweaked the lyrics slightly—changing the original "looking for a head" to "looking for some head". Through their lens, the "Goo Goo Muck" ceases to be a literal monster and instead becomes a biting, campy metaphor for a wild, prowling, and fiercely horny teenager driven by restless hormones.
