Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (ASL?, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

Todays song is Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. Born into a prosperous family in Surrey, England, Peter Gabriel was immersed in music from an early age by his musically inclined mother, who taught him to play the piano before he went on to co-found the pioneering progressive rock band Genesis while attending the prestigious Charterhouse School in 1967. After a decade of defining theatrical progressive rock with his elaborate costumes and surreal concepts, Gabriel left Genesis in 1975 to embark on a wildly successful solo career characterized by sonic experimentation, breakthrough hits like "Sledgehammer" and "In Your Eyes."

Beyond his commercial chart dominance, Gabriel’s staggering list of achievements includes winning six Grammy Awards, receiving the Man of Peace award from Nobel Peace Laureates, pioneering the global awareness of ethnic rhythms by founding the WOMAD festival and Real World Records, and being twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as both a solo artist and a member of Genesis.

This song was officially released as the lead single from his smash-hit album So on April 21, 1986. The track's legendary music video remains the most-played music video in the history of MTV. Creating it, however, was pure torture for Gabriel. Produced by Aardman Animations (the creators of Wallace & Gromit), the video required painstaking frame-by-frame pixilation and stop-motion animation. Gabriel had to lie under a sheet of hot glass for 16 hours a day for over a week while real chickens, clay models, and rotting vegetables were animated around his face frame by frame.

So let's learn this one together, the ASL version I'm still looking (can you make one?). So let's start with how to play it on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Plus check out the bonus covers. Let's get in to it.

he official Sledgehammer video in HD. Directed by Stephen R. Johnson, produced by Adam Whittaker. Claymation, pixilation, and stop motion animation provided by Aardman Animations and the Brothers Quay. Sledgehammer was the first single from the multi-platinum selling album So, the first of Peter’s studio albums to have a proper title and a watershed release in his career. Its marriage of the artistic and the commercial made for an indisputable success, with the album quickly sitting atop the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

ASL Music Videos for These Songs Don't Exist (or do they?)

In this video I tackle how we can do an acoustic cover of the 80s classic 'Sledgehammer' by Peter Gabriel! This cover and lesson was inspired by the Harry Style cover that has been popping up in my YouTube feed. It got me thinking - is it possible to cover this on acoustic? the main thing i learned from attempting this is what phenomenal singers Peter Gabriel and indeed Harry Styles are, and for the perspective alone it's been a worthy exercise. I decided to make a video of this not because I do it particularly well, but because I love taking on a challenging cover, i love watching other people take risks with the songs they cover - and I want to inspire you to tackle songs outside your comfort zone! “I think it’s like the best mixed song ever,” Harry Styles said of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” before he and his band broke into their pitch-perfect rendition of the ‘80s hit.

Robben Ford - Nothing to Nobody (ASL?, Guitar, Ukulele?, Piano?, & More)

Todays song is Nothing To Nobody by Robben Ford. Born into a musical family in Woodlake, California, Robben Ford was raised on an eclectic diet of country, gospel, and soul before picking up the saxophone at age ten and teaching himself guitar at thirteen after discovering the electric blues of Mike Bloomfield. He launched his professional career at just eighteen when he and his brothers formed the Charles Ford Blues Band, immediately landing a gig backing blues harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite. Ford’s unique ability to blend the raw emotion of traditional Chicago blues with complex jazz harmonics quickly made him a highly sought-after collaborator, leading to high-profile stints touring and recording with jazz icon Miles Davis, folk pioneer Joni Mitchell, former Beatle George Harrison, and rock icons Kiss. Over his prolific six-decade career, Ford co-founded the influential jazz-fusion group the Yellowjackets, was named one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century" by Musician magazine, and earned five Grammy Award nominations for his virtuosic solo albums

This song was officially released on April 23, 1993, as a standout track on the critically acclaimed studio album Mystic Mile. Right before recording Mystic Mile, Robben Ford had been spending his time playing in vastly different musical worlds. He spent the late 1980s touring as the lead guitarist for jazz icon Miles Davis and recording tracks for pop-rock royalty like George Harrison and Joni Mitchell. Ford formed The Blue Line and recorded "Nothing to Nobody" as a conscious decision to strip away the slick commercial pop production of the era and return to his roots of raw, improvisational trio blues.

Guitar purists heavily study the recording of "Nothing to Nobody" for its legendary guitar tone. Ford achieved his signature smooth, singing sustain on the track by plugging his guitar directly into a custom Dumble Overdrive Special amplifier. Built by the eccentric and reclusive electronic genius Alexander "Howard" Dumble, these amplifiers are considered the ultimate "holy grail" of the guitar world, with surviving units frequently selling to collectors for over $100,000.

I got to see Robben Ford play at the Catalina Club in Los Angeles about 10 years ago. Robben Ford is so talented and amazing to watch live. I was really nervous all night and was worried that he might not sign my guitar after the show, but he did and I'm still stoked about that!

So let's learn this one together on Guitar, and Base Guitar. I'm still searching for an ASL cover, Ukulele and Piano lessons for this song - Can you make one? Let's get in to it.
