Tom Petty - Christmas All Over Again (ASL?, Guitar, Bass, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

Todays song is Christmas All Over Again By Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. They were an iconic American rock band formed in Gainesville, Florida, in 1976. Blending the grit of Southern rock, the melodic hooks of British Invasion pop, and the working-class storytelling of heartland rock, they became one of the most enduring and beloved fixtures in rock history. Led by the charismatic, drawling frontman Tom Petty, they sold over 80 million records worldwide and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Tom Petty was fiercely protective of both his artistic control and his fans, leading to legendary standoffs with music executives. back in 1979 when his record label was sold to a mega-corporation, Petty refused to let his contract be transferred without his consent. To prevent the label from seizing his new songs, he secretly hid the master tapes of his upcoming album every single night. He declared bankruptcy to legally break the contract, eventually winning his artistic freedom. The resulting album was their masterpiece, Damn the Torpedoes.

This song was officially released on October 13, 1992, as a premier track on the star-studded charity compilation album A Very Special Christmas 2. At the very end of the track, as the music begins to fade out, Tom Petty playfully mutters a spoken-word Christmas wish list of exactly what he wants Santa to bring him. He rattles off a series of highly specific instruments, including a Rickenbacker guitar, two Fender Bassmans, a Chuck Berry songbook, and a "xylophone". The list was entirely improvised by Petty in the studio booth to make the production crew laugh.

The track received a massive global exposure boost when it was selected as a key song for the soundtrack of the blockbuster 1992 holiday comedy film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. The song plays prominently during a classic travel montage sequence as the McCallister family arrives at the airport, forever cementing Petty's track in the minds of '90s kids as the ultimate soundtrack for holiday travel chaos.

This is one of my favorite Christmas songs and I'm going to learn it.. So let's learn this one together... I'm shocked that I haven't found an ASL version yet (can you make one?). While we are waiting on that let's learn this one and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano.  Let's get to it:

ASL Music Videos for These Songs Don't Exist (or do they?)

I love a good synchronicity. My family has a tradition of watching a Christmas movie every single day in December leading up to the big day. And would you believe it, the very day I was figuring out how to play this song we watched Home Alone 2, which of course has Tom Petty's Christmas All Over Again in the soundtrack. So I guess us learning how to play it is meant to be!
