Bing Crosby - White Christmas (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

Todays song is White Christmas by Bing Crosby. Bing Crosby was an entertainment titan and the defining voice of mid-century American pop culture. Born in Tacoma, Washington, Crosby revolutionized the music industry as the pioneer of "crooning"—a warm, intimate vocal style made possible by his mastery of the microphone, which allowed singers to sound like they were whispering directly to the listener rather than projecting to the back of a theater. He was the world's first true multimedia superstar, dominating the radio, record charts, and Hollywood box office simultaneously for over three decades, eventually winning an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1944. Alongside his vocal legacy, he was a massive tech visionary who personally financed the development of early magnetic tape recording and videotape technology, fundamentally changing how all modern media is recorded and broadcasted.

The definitive studio version of "White Christmas" was recorded by Bing Crosby on May 29, 1942, and officially released on July 30, 1942, as part of a 78 RPM vinyl album soundtrack for the musical film Holiday Inn. Bing Crosby’s recording of "White Christmas" is officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the best-selling physical single of all time, with estimated global sales exceeding 50 million copies. It is so wildly successful that it actually outsells the second-best-selling single in history (Elton John’s 1997 tribute "Candle in the Wind") by over 17 million physical units.

The song's brilliant composer, Irving Berlin, wrote the melancholic masterpiece while staying at a hotel in Arizona during the heat of summer. While the public views it as a cozy holiday dream, the song's deep undercurrent of sadness was rooted in personal grief. Berlin's infant son had tragically passed away on Christmas Day in 1928, and every year on December 25th, Berlin and his wife would visit their son's grave. Writing the track was his way of processing that profound loss, channeling his grief into a universal longing for a simpler, happier time.

The version of "White Christmas" you hear on the radio today is actually not the original 1942 hit recording. Crosby's 1942 version was played so frequently by radio stations and pressed onto vinyl so many times that the physical master recording tape literally wore out and became structurally damaged in 1947. To save the franchise, Decca Records rushed Crosby back into the studio on March 19, 1947, where he meticulously re-recorded the track line-for-line alongside the exact same backing musicians to match the original sonic magic as closely as humanly possible.

There's a few versions to choose from depending on how far you want to stretch your talents. So let's learn this one together, the ASL version and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Let's get in to it.
