Todays song is You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You by Dean Martin. Dean Martin (born Dino Paul Crocetti) was the epitome of effortless 20th-century charisma, earning him the permanent title "The King of Cool." While the public saw a tuxedo-clad, cocktail-sipping playboy who didn't take life too seriously, the man behind the persona was actually an intensely private, hardworking, and deeply complex individual who carefully engineered his carefree image.
The most famous aspect of Dean Martin’s persona was his onstage image as a heavily intoxicated crooner, slurring jokes with a cigarette in one hand and a glass of scotch in the other, but in reality, it was almost entirely an act. As a consummate professional who took his work incredibly seriously, the "whiskey" in his glass on stage or during tapings of The Dean Martin Show was almost always apple juice or weak tea. He honed his legendary comic timing during his volatile, ten-year partnership with Jerry Lewis, where they became the biggest comedy duo in the world. To pull off his signature "lazy" demeanor later in life, he relied on an uncanny photographic memory, famously refusing to rehearse for his Emmy-winning variety show and intentionally relying on cue cards to keep his reactions completely spontaneous, fresh, and natural for the cameras.
Dean Martin originally recorded the track for his hit studio album This Is Dean Martin! in 1958, but he re-recorded his most famous, chart-topping big band version as a single on November 14, 1964, under Reprise Records. Dean Martin’s roaring 1964 big-band arrangement was so universally loved that it sparked a friendly creative rivalry within the Rat Pack. Frank Sinatra loved Dean's tempo so much that he immediately brought in the exact same arranger, Neal Hefti, to help him cut his own swing version for his 1961 album Sinatra Swings. Sammy Davis Jr. then followed suit, making the track a staple of their legendary joint live performances at the Sands Hotel.

You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You - Dean Martin/Russ Morgan Cover
This song first came to me in the movie Swingers which came out in 1996. It was Dean Martin's version which most people recognize. I didn't realize that this song was recorded much earlier, in 1946 by Russ Morgan. That's a fantastic version and I encourage you to listen to it. In the meantime, here's mine.
