Todays song is Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. This song is one of the oldest, most commercially successful, and heavily recorded seasonal standards in American music history. Because the song's melody is so universally adaptable, it has been reinvented across completely different musical genres over the last century. Two of its most famous versions couldn't be more distinct: The Jackson 5 turned it into a high-energy, bubblegum soul-pop anthem in 1970, while rock icon Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band recorded a legendary, gritty arena-rock version in 1975 that features a roaring saxophone solo by Clarence Clemons and remains a permanent rock radio staple every December.
The song was first introduced to the public on the radio by banjoist Harry Reser in October 1934, but it became an overnight national phenomenon when singer Eddie Cantor performed it on his Thanksgiving radio show on November 29, 1934. Songwriter J. Fred Coots originally had an incredibly difficult time convincing music publishers to buy the song, as many executives thought it was a silly children's ditty that wouldn't sell. However, the morning after Eddie Cantor performed it on his smash-hit radio show in November 1934, the public went into a frenzy. Music stores across America were completely overwhelmed, selling an unprecedented 100,000 copies of the sheet music in less than 24 hours and ordering over 400,000 copies by Christmas.
