Todays song is Feliz Navidad by José Feliciano. José Feliciano is a monumental Puerto Rican virtuoso musician, singer, and songwriter who became one of the first major Latin artists to achieve massive, sustained crossover success in the American mainstream. Born blind in Lares, Puerto Rico, and raised in Spanish Harlem, New York, Feliciano mastered the guitar by practicing up to 14 hours a day. He pioneered a unique, soulful musical fusion—blending traditional Latin rhythms with American blues, jazz, soul, and rock. Over a prolific career spanning more than six decades, he has won nine Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist in 1968, and has earned a legendary reputation as one of the greatest acoustic guitarists of all time.
This song was released on November 9, 1970, as a track on his self-titled holiday studio album under RCA Victor. Despite its legendary longevity, José Feliciano wrote "Feliz Navidad" in just 10 minutes at the RCA Studios on Sunset Boulevard. His producer, Rick Jarrard, suggested adding an original song to the album, and a deeply homesick Feliciano immediately began playing. Trapped in Los Angeles for the holidays, he was missing his family in New York and his extended family in Puerto Rico; the upbeat melody poured out of him as a literal musical mechanism to combat his intense loneliness.
The track is famous for being one of the simplest songs ever written, containing only 19 total words. There are six words in Spanish ("Feliz Navidad, próspero año y felicidad") and 13 words in English ("I wanna wish you a merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart"). Feliciano intentionally added the English verse because he knew American radio stations would routinely drop or refuse to play a purely Spanish song on mainstream formats, effectively engineering a universal bridge that belonged to everyone.
Even though "Feliz Navidad" is now globally recognized as a top-tier holiday staple, it was not an immediate commercial hit. It took a staggering 28 years for the original version to finally make its very first appearance on the US Billboard charts in 1998. Propelled by digital streaming decades later, the song finally achieved its ultimate peak on the Billboard Hot 100 at Number 6 in January 2021.
