David Bowie (born David Robert Jones) was a monumental English singer, songwriter, and actor widely revered as one of the most influential cultural chameleons in music history. Born in Brixton, London, in 1947, Bowie was raised on an eclectic mix of jazz, early rock 'n' roll, and avant-garde theater before making his professional musical debut in the late 1960s. Over a staggering five-decade career, he sold over 140 million records worldwide and became a master of reinvention, constantly changing his musical styles across folk-rock, glam rock, plastic soul, electronic ambient music, pop, and industrial rock. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and left behind a legacy that fundamentally redefined the visual and sonic boundaries of pop culture.
This song was officially released as a standalone single on July 11, 1969. David Bowie’s record label intentionally rushed the single’s release to drop exactly nine days before the historic Apollo 11 moon landing. The genius marketing gamble paid off completely when the BBC used "Space Oddity" as the background soundtrack for their live television coverage of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landing on the moon. Bowie later found it hilarious, noting that the BBC executives clearly hadn't paid attention to the lyrics, since they were pairing a historic triumph with a bleak song about an astronaut getting permanently stranded and dying in deep space.
Despite the perfect timing with the real-world space race, Bowie didn't write the song about NASA. He was deeply inspired after going to a London cinema while stoned to watch Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film's overwhelming sense of cosmic isolation and aesthetic beauty moved him so profoundly that the lyrics and chords for Major Tom’s journey poured out of him just a few days later.
Beyond its historic space-race legacy, "Space Oddity" has also served as a powerhouse cinematic device in modern films, tracking pivotal moments of courage and high-stakes tension. In Ben Stiller's 2013 adventure-drama The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the song becomes the ultimate catalyst for the titular character's transformation; Cheryl (Kristen Wiig) appears in a sweeping imagination sequence to sing the track acoustic, giving Walter the courage to literally sprint and jump onto a moving helicopter in Greenland. In stark contrast, David Leitch's 2017 neon-noir action thriller Atomic Blonde flips the track's cosmic isolation into a gritty, cold-war tension building blocks, utilizing a brooding, heavy electronic cover of the song by KALEIDA to soundtrack a high-stakes, sleek underground sequence through Berlin.
