Todays song is No Rain by Blind Melon. This band was formed in 1990 in Los Angeles, California. Combining elements of alternative rock, 1970s classic rock, funk, and folk, they stood out uniquely from the heavier, darker grunge sounds coming out of Seattle at the time. The band's classic lineup for the track consisted of Shannon Hoon (Lead Vocals), Rogers Stevens (Guitar), Christopher Thorn (Guitar), Brad Smith (Bass), and Glen Graham (Drums).
While the track first appeared on their self-titled debut album on September 22, 1992, "No Rain" was officially released as a breakout commercial single on June 8, 1993. Despite its bright, upbeat melody, the song is actually about clinical depression and isolation. Bassist Brad Smith wrote the song before the band even formed. He had moved to L.A. from Mississippi and fallen into a deep personal funk while struggling to find work. At the time, he was also dating a girl who suffered from depression and would sleep for up to 20 hours a day. Smith wrote the lyric "I like watching the puddles gather rain" because he realized she would sleep through sunny days and literally only find comfort when it was dreary outside.
The song's massive success was driven by its iconic MTV music video starring 10-year-old Heather DeLoach as the tap-dancing "Bee Girl". The director, Samuel Bayer, didn't dream up the bee costume out of nowhere—it was completely modeled after Blind Melon's actual album cover. The cover features a real, vintage 1975 family photograph of drummer Glen Graham's younger sister, Georgia Graham, wearing a homemade bee costume for a school play.
