Dawn Penn - No, No No (ASL?, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano & More)

Todays song is No No No by Dawn Penn.  Born Dawn Pickering in Kingston, Jamaica, Dawn Penn is a living legend and pioneer of Jamaican music whose career bridges the pivotal transitions between classical composition, 1960s rocksteady, and modern dancehall. Raised in a strict musical environment where she mastered classical theory, the violin, and piano up to grade seven under examiners from the UK Royal School of Music, she initially broke out in 1967 with her signature hit "You Don't Love Me" under the legendary Studio One label.

However, disillusioned with the music industry, she completely walked away from singing in 1970 and spent the next 17 years living a normal life in the Virgin Islands, working corporate and administrative roles for accounting firms, local banks, airlines, and retail stores. After returning to Jamaica in 1987 to quietly revive her musical passions, her 1994 collaboration with production duo Steely & Clevie catapulted her into an unprecedented global phenomenon; the revamped track charted in 68 countries, earned a Grammy nomination, and achieved a Platinum certification in the United Kingdom as the highest-certified solo reggae song by a female artist in UK history, ultimately securing her timeless legacy and leading to high-profile modern collaborations with top-tier hip-hop artists and the iconic virtual band Gorillaz on their 2023 album Cracker Island.

The modern, globally recognized version of the song was released as a single on February 17, 1994, serving as the titular lead track for her debut studio album, No, No, No. The 1994 hit was actually a re-recording. Dawn Penn originally cut the track all the way back in 1967 as a slow, soulful rocksteady single for Coxsone Dodd's legendary Studio One label. After leaving the music industry entirely in 1970 to move to the Virgin Islands, she returned to Jamaica decades later. In 1992, she performed the song at a Studio One anniversary show where producers Steely & Clevie were the backing musicians. The live chemistry was so electric they immediately went into the studio to revamp it into the 1994 global dancehall smash.

While it is a pillar of Jamaican music, the song's DNA is actually rooted in American blues. Dawn Penn's track was a loose cover of a 1960 song by Arkansas blues singer Willie Cobbs, which itself stole melodies from a 1955 R&B track by Bo Diddley titled "She's Fine, She's Mine". Decades later, the cycle continued as Penn's hook became a massive target for modern pop royalty, famously sampled or covered by artists like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Lily Allen.

So let's learn this one together. I'm still searching for an ASL cover - Can you make one? For now lets start learning this song on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Plus check out the bonus cover, my favorite cover is from Boogaloo Assassins. Let's get in to it.
