Todays song is Let Her Cry by Hootie & The Blowfish. The band formed in 1986 at the University of South Carolina. The core classic lineup features Darius Rucker (lead vocals/guitar), Mark Bryan (guitar), Dean Felber (bass), and Jim Sonefeld (drums). Together, their warm, straightforward pop-rock style acted as a massive, comforting alternative to the dark, distorted grunge music dominating the mid-1990s. One of the most widespread misconceptions in rock history is that frontman Darius Rucker is "Hootie". Rucker is a solo artist, and the band name is actually a tribute to two of his college friends. While attending South Carolina, Rucker ran with a tight-knit crew that included a guy with large, round glasses whom everyone nicknamed "Hootie" (because he looked like an owl), and another friend with famously large, round cheeks whom they nicknamed "The Blowfish". One night, while the friends walked into a party together, Rucker blurted out, "Look, it’s Hootie and the blowfish!" The phrase stuck, and the musicians claimed it for as their band name.
This song was released as a single on December 5, 1994. It served as the massive second single from Hootie & the Blowfish’s blockbuster debut studio album, Cracked Rear Window, that went on to become one of the best-selling albums in music history. Darius Rucker revealed that the song was born after a late night out at a bar. He came home heavily under the influence, put on the 1990 debut album by The Black Crowes, and began listening to their soulful ballad "She Talks to Angels" (which is also about addiction). Deeply moved by the track, Rucker picked up his acoustic guitar and spontaneously wrote the entire lyric sheet for "Let Her Cry" in just a few minutes.
"Let Her Cry" became a certified commercial juggernaut, peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track permanently sealed the band's legacy at the 38th Annual Grammy Awards, where it won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, alongside the band taking home the coveted Best New Artist trophy. Decades after dominating the '90s rock charts, frontman Darius Rucker made music history by pivoting into a massively successful solo career in country music. He became the first Black artist to win the New Artist Award at the CMA Awards and achieved a diamond-certified country hit with his famous 2013 cover of "Wagon Wheel".
