The Cure / 311 - Lovesong (ASL, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

Todays song is Love Song by The Cure / covered by 311. The Cure formed in West Sussex, England, in 1978, The Cure became the definitive pioneers of goth rock and post-punk. Led by the iconic, wild-haired frontman Robert Smith, the band mastered a sonic duality: they could pivot seamlessly from bleak, cinematic melancholy (Disintegration) to bright, quirky pop perfection ("Friday I'm in Love"). They have sold over 30 million albums and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

311 formed in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1988, 311 (pronounced "three-eleven") became pioneers of the '90s alternative boom by creating an infectious, high-energy fusion of reggae, rap, rock, and funk. Fronted by Nick Hexum and rhythmic rapper/turntablist SA Martinez, the band built a massive, fiercely loyal grassroots following through non-stop touring. Their 1995 self-titled album went triple-platinum, powered by massive smash hits like "Down" and "All Mixed Up." In Omaha, Nebraska, 311 is the local police code for "indecent exposure." One hot summer day, the band's original guitarist, Jim Watson, went skinny-dipping in a public pool. He was caught by the police, arrested, and cited for indecent exposure. Watson eventually left the band and was replaced by Tim Mahoney, but the legendary name stuck.

This song was released by The Cure on August 21, 1989, as the third single from their magnum opus album, Disintegration. It became the band's biggest American hit, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Robert Smith wrote "Lovesong" as a literal wedding present for his fiancée, Mary Poole. Because The Cure was constantly touring the world, Smith felt guilty about being away so much. He wrote the track to explicitly assure her that no matter how far apart they were, he would always love her. Mary can be seen dancing with Robert in the music video's hidden fairy cave.

This song was released by 311 on February 24, 2004, as a single for the soundtrack of the Adam Sandler romantic comedy film 50 First Dates, later appearing on their Greatest Hits album. It hit number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. 311 originally had no intention of recording the song. Film director Peter Segal personally begged the band to cover a '80s new wave track for 50 First Dates. They initially tried to record a cover of The Clash, but it didn't fit the movie's Hawaiian, laid-back vibe. Nick Hexum casually suggested translating The Cure's goth-synth melody into a slow-tempo, hazy reggae-dub groove—creating a cover so distinct that an entire generation of fans grew up believing it was a 311 original.

So let's learn this one together, the ASL version and on Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. Plus check out the bonus covers. Let's get in to it.
