The origin of Post Malone's stage name is a blend of his legal identity and a random internet tool. The first part of his stage name is simply his actual last name, Post, while the second half came about when he was 14 or 15 years old and needed a rap name to label his music. He plugged his real name into an online rap name generator—widely believed to be the Wu-Tang Clan Name Generator—which spit out the word "Malone." Thinking it had a great ring to it, he stuck with the name ever since, though he later had to clarify to sports fans that it had absolutely nothing to do with NBA legend Karl Malone
This song was originally released on November 4, 2016, as a promotional single from his debut studio album, Stoney. It was later officially pushed as a radio single in January 2017, eventually becoming certified Diamond (over 10 million units sold) by the RIAA. The lyric "I was in the sandbox, next to you and now we're counting paper planes" is a literal nod to Post Malone's incredibly rapid rise. Just a couple of years before recording the track, Post Malone had dropped out of college in Texas, moved to Los Angeles, and was sleeping on the floor of a closet in a house rented by a group of gaming YouTubers. He recorded his first hit, "White Iverson," in that same house before "Congratulations" officially cemented his status as a permanent mainstream superstar.
The official music video, which features champagne showers, confetti, and casual studio hangouts, was filmed in a relaxed environment that included a real beer pong game. Post Malone is famously obsessed with beer pong and has since hosted his own celebrity tournaments. The video's celebratory, unscripted vibe perfectly mirrored the song's breakout success, amassing over 1.5 billion views.
