This is one of the famous guitar bedtime stories of all time. The story of Robert Johnson is the foundational folklore of American rock and blues, a narrative defined entirely by three inseparable elements: groundbreaking guitar genius, cheap corn whiskey, and a restless trail of relationships with women. Before dying mysteriously at the young age of 27, his brief seven-month recording career completely revolutionized modern music.
In the early 1930s, older Mississippi blues icons like Son House remembered Johnson as a passionate harmonica player but an embarrassingly bad guitarist. After dropping out of the music scene for roughly a year, Johnson returned to the Delta with an otherworldly, impossibly advanced guitar technique. He could play rhythm, bass lines, and lead slide melodies simultaneously, making a single guitar sound like a full two-man band.
Because his peers could not comprehend how he improved so fast, a supernatural legend took hold. The story alleged that Johnson took his guitar to a desolate Mississippi crossroads at midnight. There, he was met by a large dark figure—the Devil—who took his guitar, tuned it, played a few songs, and handed it back, giving Johnson absolute mastery of the instrument in exchange for his eternal soul. In reality, historians note that Johnson had simply spent that missing year intensely studying under an unrecorded guitar master named Ike Zimmerman, practicing for hours deep inside quiet cemeteries at night.

Correction regarding the discovery of the third photo of Robert Johnson. The estate supposedly authenticated the photo with the help of a forensic artist in 2013, but in 2015, forty-nine signatories comprising of multiple Johnson scholars and Blues historians issued a statement disputing that decision.
