Todays song is Love Shack by The B52's. The B-52's (originally spelled The B-52-s) formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1976. The classic, definitive lineup features Fred Schneider (vocals/percussion), Kate Pierson (vocals/keyboard), Cindy Wilson (vocals/percussion), and Keith Strickland (drums/guitar). The band's name has nothing to do with military aviation or the famous Boeing stratofortress bomber aircraft. Instead, "The B-52's" was a popular 1970s Southern slang term used to describe the exaggerated, towering bouffant hairstyles worn by women in the American South, which physically resembled the distinct, rounded nose cone of the B-52 aircraft. Singers Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson adopted these massive, synthetic hairpieces as their signature look on stage, prompting the group to claim the slang as their official band name.
This song was released as a single on June 20, 1989. It served as the explosive lead commercial track for The B-52's multi-platinum fifth studio album, Cosmic Thing, rescuing the group from career obscurity and transforming them into a permanent pop-culture fixture. The track is a high-octane, surf-rock, and dance-pop anthem that describes a hidden, ramshackle cabin out in the woods where people gather to dance, let their guards down, and love freely. Band members have explicitly noted that the track was envisioned as a celebration of radical inclusivity and communal joy during the height of the devastating HIV/AIDS epidemic, which had tragically taken the life of their founding guitarist Ricky Wilson just a few years prior.
The real-life cabin that inspired the song met a tragically fitting, rock-and-roll end. In December 2004, a severe structural fire tore through the Athens property, completely burning the historic cabin to the ground. The only surviving relic of the structure was its literal tin roof, which was completely scorched and rusted by the flames.
